چکیده

The field of neuroaesthetics has gained in popularity in recent years but also attracted criticism from the perspectives both of the humanities and the sciences. In an effort to consolidate research in the field, we characterize neuroaesthetics as the cognitive neuroscience of aesthetic experience, drawing on long traditions of research in empirical aesthetics, on the one hand, and cognitive neuroscience on the other. We clarify the aims and scope of the field, identifying relationships between neuroscientific investigations of aesthetics, beauty and art. The approach we advocate takes as its object of study a wide spectrum of aesthetic experiences, resulting from interactions between individuals, sensory stimuli and context. Drawing on its parent fields, a cognitive neuroscience of aesthetics would investigate the complex cognitive processes and functional networks of brain regions involved in those experiences, without placing a value on them. Thus, the cognitive scientific approach may develop in a way that is mutually complementary to approaches in the humanities.

Where Neuroscience and Art Embrace The Neuroaesthetics

Neuroscience has recently contributed a lot to the understanding of aesthetic experience features. Science, art and creativity are not really distinctively different entities. The parallelism seen between the properties of art and organizational principals of the brain has been highlighted through neuroaesthetic studies. Aesthetic as a subjective experience has comprehensively been studies thro...

Stability and Variability in Aesthetic Experience: A Review

Based on psychophysics' pragmatic dualism, we trace the cognitive neuroscience of stability and variability in aesthetic experience. With regard to different domains of aesthetic processing, we touch upon the relevance of cognitive schemata for aesthetic preference. Attitudes and preferences are explored in detail. Evolutionary constraints on attitude formation or schema generation are elucidat...

The world can look better: enhancing beauty experience with brain stimulation.

Aesthetic appreciation is part of our everyday life: it is a subjective judgment we make when looking at a painting, a landscape, or--in fact--at another person. Neuroimaging and electrophysiological evidence suggests that the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a critical role in aesthetic judgments. Here, we show that the experience of beauty can be artificially enhanced with br...

The Science of Beauty

Speakers from the forefront of fields including mathematics, physics, neuroscience, art and psychology explored the experience of beauty. Over two days, they considered what beauty from sensory sources such as music and art has in common with beauty from cognitive ones such as mathematics or from moral sources. Sir David Attenborough also considered whether some animals make judgments for aesth...

From beauty to knowledge: a new frame for the neuropsychological approach to aesthetics

Over the last decade the psychological and neurobiological approach to aesthetics has collected relevant data about the experience of art, aesthetic products, natural phenomena, and non-artistic objects—even if these data are somewhat divergent depending on the many differences in the stimuli, procedures, techniques, instructions, and tasks that are used (Chatterjee, 2011; Nadal and Skov, 2013)...
